Feebas

is one of the fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon Franchise - a series of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri.

The name Feebas is a portmanteau of the words feeble and bass. The Japanese name Hinbass is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for and the English word bass.

Feebas has an appearance highly similar to that of Magikarp. It is decidedly fish-like, with tan skin flecked with darker patches of brown. Its fins are blue - it has two pectoral fins, a dorsal fin shaped like a trapezoid and one tail fin that looks frayed and tattered. Feebas has several gill slits like the lamprey, an eel-like type of fish.

Biological characteristics

Feebas is an aquatic Pokémon which can survive in both fresh and salt water thanks to its hardy nature. It prefers best ponds that are filled with weeds.

Feebas has an unattractive, shabby appearance and it looks (and is) weak and worthless, as its fins are ragged and tattered from the moment of its birth. It is hard to find, but it is an easy Pokémon to catch if encountered since it is slow and dimwitted, but not many people in the Pokémon world take the trouble to capture, study or raise it, as they find it a boring species. However, Feebas can evolve into a much more interesting Pokémon: Milotic.

In the video games

Feebas were first introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, and in those games are unique to Route 119. Feebas, like many Water-type Pokémon, are found by fishing but have been called "one of the most annoying Pokémon" due to the fact that they are extremely difficult to find.[1]

Route 119 has approximately 400 "squares", or tiles, where any of the game's fishing rods can be used, but Feebas may be found in only six of them at any given time.[2] The exact location of these tiles is random and changes each time a new "trendy saying" is introduced to the distant island where Dewford Town is located. The location of the tiles has nothing to do with the saying itself, it is only randomized again the saying is changed. While the tiles themselves are hard to find, Feebas happen to be extremely common while fishing on them.[1]

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Feebas can be found in the basement of Mt. Coronet. It can be caught with either rod, but will only appear in four tiles at any time. The location of these tiles will reset at the end of each day. On these tiles, the odds of a Feebas appearing are about 50%.

Feebas has been compared with another weak, fish-like Pokémon, Magikarp.[1] Both are Water-type Pokémon with such low stats that they are considered almost worthless in battle until evolved into much more powerful species (Milotic and Gyarados respectively).[3] Their primary differences are in their rarity (Magikarp are one of the most common Water-type Pokémon available) and moves that they are able to learn. While all Pokémon species have a unique set of moves available to them, some Pokémon are extremely limited and may only learn a wider variety once they have evolved. Magikarp fall into this category, while Feebas do not - Feebas are able to be taught moves through TMs and HMs, breeding, and other means not available to those with limited movepools.

Feebas are not only unusual in their availability, but in their evolution as well. Feebas will only evolve into Milotic once their Beauty statistic has been raised to 170, which is almost the max beauty level. The Beauty statistic is one of five that play an important role in Pokémon contests, side-quests completely unrelated to battling. These aspects can be raised by feeding various types of Pokéblock to a Pokémon in preparation for one of these contests. Feebas are then transformed from a considerably weak Pokémon into a formidable opponent.[4]

In the Pokémon anime

Feebas's first appearance in the Pokémon anime was in episode #351, "Whiscash and Ash", where it "attacked" Jessie's hair while she was fishing.

Feebas makes a slightly more prominent appearance in episode #355, "Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend", where the recurring character of the Magikarp salesman hoodwinked Team Rocket into buying a Magikarp painted to look like a Feebas. The scam was exposed as soon as "Feebas" was put in water. The scam was facilitated using the fact that Feebas evolves into Milotic.

Feebas makes an appearance in the Diamond and Pearl episode "The Strongest Magikarp and the Most Beautiful Feebas".
